About me

I have been engaged in Economic and Community Development as a consultant, volunteer and activist for over 40 years with experience in Canada, North America and Internationally.

My knowledge and expertise includes Community, Economic and Regional Development, International Development and Practical Research, Community Building and Business Development, Capacity Building and Education, Organizational Development, Civil Society, Local Government, Election Monitoring and Project Management and Evaluation.

I have acquired status as a Certified Economic Developer with a Diploma in Economic Development from the University of Waterloo in Canada.

The foundation for my work evolved from a diverse and varied background in business, support to people and their communities, governments and non-governmental bodies, and was complimented by 12 years as councilor and Mayor of Pasadena in Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada.

My work activities    have included the provision of guidance, advice, hands on support and education. This combination of work and volunteer experience has provided me a comprehensive set of managerial and facilitation skills, communications abilities and an aptitude towards creativity, innovation and problem solving.

Besides my work and experience in North America, I have lived and worked in Scotland, Ukraine and The Gambia and have participated in and completed numerous assignments in Europe and throughout Asia including China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Thailand and India.

Much of my development work over the past years has been in communities, who were facing despair and struggling to overcome some economic or social challenge.

These assignments and extensive travels have led to an innate understanding of the human aspects of development and living, an inherent appreciation of people, sensitivity to their needs and a gift of sharing that is the basis to my life and my work.

I am an avid essayist with philosophical and developmental articles and essays published by universities, in academic and other journals and through various media sources relating to community, economic and social issues.

There has been much opportunity, in my role as a resource person, facilitator and moderator for conferences and workshops to share accumulated experience, ideas and views.

    1. Many thanks Jim for the very Kind words. Wishing you all the best in the New Year and in your new endeavours. Retirement is likely our last adventure in this life and we might as well make it all that it can be, despite the limitations of aging, they will happen anyway.
